Turning 50, I wrote this thinking about how strange it is that we talk to time and wind the same way we talk to people, as if they’d done something to us before and simply stopped. “Wind that used to blow,” “time that has slipped away,” that grammar felt more honest than any direct statement about growing older. The wind hasn’t disappeared. It’s just gotten too quiet to keep calling it wind.
Tango was the only genre I trusted for this. I didn’t want the song to resolve, because I don’t think this feeling ever resolves, it just keeps blowing, keeps passing, “that will never return,” and I let the final verses simply return to the same choruses unchanged, instead of forcing a conclusion I don’t believe in.
I think tango has always known that the right response to time isn’t fighting it or making peace with it. It’s dancing through it anyway, with grace, against something you were never going to win.
With that said, enjoy “Viento de la vida.”
