Under the Sun
That clear hot day
My heart was in love
I wasn’t afraid
I wanted to know
That sunny day
My chances I took
I waited for you
I waited for love
And under the sun
I took my way
And went to the road
And waited for you
You didn’t know
I was there for you
And that all my heart
Waited for you
Waited for you
Waited for you!
Under the sun
Aside the road
I waited for you
I waited for love
And then you came
Alone in the road
I looked to your eyes
And told you my love
Under the sun
Aside the road
I showed you my heart
I waited for love
You smiled to me
What I didn’t know
You were there for me
Waiting for me
Smiling to me
Aside the road
In that happy day
You gave me your love!
Under the sun
Aside the road
You waited for me
You waited for love
What I didn’t know
You were there for me
Waiting for me
You waited for me
I waited for you
We waited for love!
And love waited for us oh!
This one is about my first love, the adolescent one, when I genuinely didn’t know whether what I felt was going anywhere or whether I was just standing somewhere with hope.
The structural twist, revealing halfway through that she’d also been waiting, this whole time, wasn’t something I planned as a twist. That’s simply how it actually happened, that particular, disorienting discovery that someone else had been standing in the same uncertainty the whole time, each of us invisible to the other’s hope until we finally looked up.
I kept the setting fixed on purpose, under the sun, along the road, the same still, daytime scene for both the waiting and the meeting. First love, to me, didn’t feel like weather. It felt like plain daylight that I somehow failed to read correctly until I finally did.
“And love waited for us, oh!” is the closest I get anywhere in this catalogue to being simply, uncomplicatedly happy. I let myself have that, once, without irony.
