¡Oye a tus pies!

Genre: Salsa Released: 2024-11-13

I wanted to write salsa about salsa itself, because I’ve never really understood it as something you just dance. Every scene I’ve been part of, watching a dance floor fill up, has felt closer to a small temporary community forming out of nowhere than to the rhythm itself, and I wanted a song that admitted that out loud instead of pretending it’s only about the steps.

I opened it like a stage announcer on purpose, “The Only! The Unrepeatable!,” because that slightly absurd ceremonial grandeur is part of what I genuinely love about a live orchestra’s entrance, and I wanted the joke and the reverence to sit in the same line. Then I let the list escalate deliberately: dance, then heal the grief, then become the pulse of your own heart. I didn’t want salsa to stay physical for the whole song. I wanted it to climb from the feet toward something closer to instinct, because that’s genuinely the arc I’ve felt it take in my own life.

Naming Montreal instead of New York or Cali mattered to me. It’s the city where I live, and even on Canadian soil, it also has a vibrant salsa scene of its own.

So get dressed up, turn up the volume, and dance to “¡Oye a tus pies!”
