On Nasty Walls
Bare child in the world
You watched the stars
And smiled life!
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
You shielded your pain
And smiled life!
When you came to age
Alone in this world
Nobody noticed, alone
You had to deal with it
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
You shielded your tears
And smiled life!
You raised your kin
But they went away
Was not your sin, but
You started to stray
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
You shielded your grief
And smiled life!
With fears and no means
You looked for your place
And critters of love
Did come to your aid
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
You shielded solitude
And smiled life!
They summoned the sky
They called for the stars
And the Big Mother
Yielded your place!
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
You shielded your means
And smiled life!
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
You shielded loneliness
And smiled life!
Once you earned your space
Your kin returned
In search of a dwelling
Looking for your place
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
You shielded your anger
And smiled life!
Your place, that place you had
Is not yours anymore
Only those critters
Did mean for you love
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
You shielded anguish
And smiled life!
And passing the years
Your time was to leave
And after three suns
The stars called for you!
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
You shielded your soul
And smiled life!
On nasty walls
On dirty walls
You shielded your life
And smiled eternity!
This is a track that tells the life story of someone who spent her whole life searching for her place in the world, how she got it and how she lost it. That person sealed her sadness, her rage, her hopes and her fear into the grime of the walls around her. By the end of her life, those same nasty walls were what finally gave her shelter enough to smile at eternity.
I’m proud to have been able to pull, out of the sea of AI, a blues that’s raw down to the root, simple and unpolished in its execution, pure melancholy with no ornament at all, one that doesn’t ask permission before it makes you cry.
