Love of a summer day

This one is for Yadira, and I want to say it plainly. She died young, cancer took her before her time.

Autumn arriving “too fast” is the truest line I wrote in the whole song. “Destiny without any mercy did laugh at you” was a flash of real bitterness.

“I couldn’t stand there for you” is the line I kept, take after take, because it’s the honest one. I found out about her death without ever having known she was sick, and I had to give that grief a voice. The ending breaks its own rule on purpose. Winter is supposed to be where the last warmth dies, but I let the love survive the metaphor, because that’s really how it was. I still, genuinely, couldn’t say goodbye, and I didn’t want the song to pretend otherwise just to end cleanly.

So, “Love of a summer day” is a song of sadness, but wrapped in a soul ballad it turned out to be one of the most beautiful in the catalogue.
